At the time of the initial foundation of the HNS, Croatia was part of Austria-Hungary. After the First World War it became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and Croatian players were part on the Yugoslav national team ran by the FA of Yugoslavia (founded 1919). The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was dissolved by the Nazis during the Second World War with an independent Croatia playing fourteen internationals from 1941-1944. After the war ended Yugoslavia was re-formed as a Socialist Federal Republic and the FA of Yugoslavia again took control of all football. In 1990 a newly established Croatian football team played against the USA. Croatia officially gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 and the football federation was admitted to FIFA in 1992 and UEFA in 1993.
