Northern Ireland had a new manager for the 1978 World Cup qualifiers with the legendary Danny Blanchflower taking charge. He got off to a dream start as the Netherlands were held in the series opener. Thereafter, results were mixed, and typically Northern Irish. While that draw saw the Dutch lose their only points of the campaign, Iceland claimed their only points with a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in Reykjavik.
