Biography:
Steve Hawe came through the ranks at Blackburn where among his colleagues were Gary Hamilton and Garth Scates. The trio played in the 1998 Youth Cup Final defeat by Everton, but only Hamilton would play a senior game for the club. It was during a loan spell at Blackpool that Hawe made his Football League début  playing in the opening two games of the 2000/01 season.

That same season Hawe spent another loan spell with another third-tier side, Halifax. He made his début for the Shaymen as a substitute against Darlington but was sent-off in his next game, a 2-0 FA Cup defeat by non-league Gateshead and he was in-and-out of the team through to the expiration of his loan deal in February.

Previously a regular in Northern Ireland's Youth and Schoolboy teams, Hawe made the step-up to Under-21 level in March 2001. Normally a central defender, he played at right-back in a 2-0 Euro qualifier defeat by the Czech Republic in Ballymena. He won a second cap that June in the reverse fixture, coming on for Shaun Holmes during a 4-0 defeat in Prague.
