Biography:Built like a centre-forward, Peter McParland strength and power on the left-wing made him one of this most feared players of his generation - ask Manchester United's goalkeeper who was knocked out by a "Packie" challenge early in the 1957 FA Cup final!
A product of the Gaelic game in his native Newry, his early dalliances with soccer brought him the then mandatory life ban by the GAA. Still, he had few regrets as he joined English-giants Aston Villa while still a teenager. In a decade at Villa Park he claimed FA Cup and League Cup winner's medals.
McParland made an instant mark on the international stage too, scoring twice on his debut against Wales while still just nineteen. He went on to become one of Ireland's most prolific players, with ten goals in 34 appearances, enjoying a real purple-patch at the 1958 World Cup Finals where he a remarkable scored five in five!
McParland played out his Football League career with Wolves and Plymouth before winding down his career with spells in Canada, the USA and as player-manager at Glentoran.
