Biography:
William (universally known as 'Tar') Hamilton arrived in senior football with Distillery - via intermediate side, Dundela. He first appeared in the Distillery first eleven at the tail-end of the 1901/02 season, and was a regular in the inside-right position the following term as three trophies were won. Indeed Hamilton scored in both the 3-0 Irish Cup Final victory over Bohemians at Dalymount Park, and in the replayed 4-1 Co. Antrim Shield Final victory over Linfield.
In the 1905 close-season Hamilton moved to Glentoran. The club suffered one of their worst ever seasons, finishing rock-bottom of the Irish League, and tasting victory just four times in all competitions. It was a bad luck as much as anything that scuppered the Glens' campaign, Hamilton limping-off injured in the Co. Antrim Shield defeat by Cliftonville being just one instance of the team going down to ten men through injury.
A return to Distillery in 1907 brought Hamilton a change of luck, and he earned his only cap at inside-right in a 1-0 win over Wales in April 1908. In 1910 he won his second Irish Cup winner's medal, as Cliftonville were defeated 1-0 in the Final, before he left Grosvenor for Belfast Celtic at the end of the 1910/11 season.
