Biography:
Paul Ramsey rose through the ranks at Leicester City, establishing himself as right-back in their 1983 promotion winning team. He was a regular, either in midfield or defence, for the Foxes for most of the 1980s. Although he captained the side for a few seasons, he was occasionally ruled out by injuries or bouts of poor form.
During the 1990/91 season Ramsey lost his regular spot in the Leicester side and with another change of manager that summer he was allowed to leave Filbert Street. He joined Cardiff City, and captained them to the Division Three title in 1993 as well as consecutive Welsh Cup titles. He spent an unsettled two seasons with St Johnstone, but was all-too-happy to return to Wales as soon as the opportunity arose.
Ramsey's international career was perhaps most blighted by his versatility and he could never convince Billy Bingham that he was a worthy regular in either midfield or defence. An early highlight of his 14 cap international career came against West Germany as his shot led to Norman Whiteside's goal in a famous 1-0 win in Hamburg. He also played his part in winning the 1984 British Championships and in qualifying for the 1986 World Cup, but he was an unused squad member in Mexico. Thereafter he earned just five more caps as Bingham looked elsewhere for the players to reproduce the glories of the early-80s.
